Looking for something different?  We are a co-educational youth rowing & sailing program based in Kent, Washington focused on crewing our youth built 28 foot Native Alaskan Umiak in the Shipyard School Raid.  The Raid is a 120 mile open boat race staring on Gabriola Island in British Columbia and heading north up the Straight of Georgia into Desolation Sound and includes varying types of traditional crafts piloted by a wide range of different crews from across Canada and the US.

In 2007 our crew set about building our craft with the help of Corey Freedman and the Skin Boat School as well as help from the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle.  In addition to the skin on frame boat hull we designed and made the oars, spars and sails.

In 2008 we set sail in the Shipyard School Raid with a crew of seven youths and two adults for the adventure of a lifetime.  Over eight days and a 120 miles our crew sailed through brisk winds, braved rough seas, rowed through glassy waters and soaked up lots of sun and friendship to form lifetime memories and bounds.

In 2009 our crew of Umiak Raiders will reform and return to the Shipyard School Raid.  Over the months ahead we will be repairing and improving our boat's sails, oars and rudder, practicing our rowing and sailing skills and seeking new members to join our friendly crew.
