The SSS 407 is affiliated with the Seattle Sea Scout Fleet and is a youth development program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. Our purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. SSS 407 is focused on the construction and crewing of a 28 foot Umiak Native Alaskan style skin on frame boat. The umiak, umiaq, umiac, oomiac, oomiak or angyapik: An open skin boat, it was originally used by most of the coastal peoples from the arctic for hunting large sea mammals and for transportation. Because of its length (16'-40') and wide beam (4'-8'), the umiak is the ideal vessel for group travel and exploration, or for transporting large amounts of gear and supplies. |
