Umiak Project

We are a high adventure, experience based co-ed Venture program located near  Lake Meridian in Kent, WA

Sea Scout Ship 407 is a youth development program for young men and women who are 14 through 21 years of age. Our purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. We are affiliated with the Seattle Sea Scouts and Venturing.

We participate in high adventure events like the Shipyard School Raid and the Pacific Challenge.

SSS 407 is focused on the construction and crewing of a 28 foot Umiak Native Alaskan style skin on frame boat.

The umiak, umiaq, umiac, oomiac, oomiak or angyapik: An open skin boat, it was originally used by most of the coastal peoples from the arctic for hunting large sea mammals and for transportation. Because of its length (16'-40') and wide beam (4'-8'), the umiak is the ideal vessel for group travel and exploration, or for transporting large amounts of gear and supplies.
